Itinerary and Where to Stay
Day 1: Nairobi to Old Moses Camp
On the first day, you will head out from Nairobi for the drive toward the town of Nanyuki, which sits right on the equator. After a quick stop to organize gear and meet the mountain crew, you’ll continue to the Sirimon Gate, where the trek officially begins. The first leg of the walk is a steady climb through the forest and bamboo belts. You’ll notice the air getting cooler and thinner as you move higher, eventually reaching Old Moses Camp, which sits at about 3,300 meters. The camp is a basic but comfortable mountain hut where you’ll have dinner and spend your first night, getting used to the altitude while looking out over the surrounding hills.
Meals Day 1: Lunch, Dinner
Destination: Mount Kenya
Day 2: Old Moses to Shipton Camp
The second day is a long and challenging hike that takes you deep into the Mackinder Valley. You’ll leave the last of the trees behind and move into the moorland, a landscape filled with unique plants like the giant lobelia and groundsels that only grow at these heights. The trail crosses several small streams as you make your way toward the jagged peaks of Batian and Nelion. By the time you reach Shipton’s Camp, you’ll be sitting directly at the base of the main summits. This camp is much colder and more rugged than the first, and you’ll spend the evening resting and preparing for the early start the next morning.
Meals Day 2: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Summit & Descent to Nairobi
On the third day, the climb begins in the dark, usually around three in the morning. You’ll use headlamps to navigate the steep, frozen scree slopes as you make the final push toward Point Lenana, the hiker’s summit. You’ll arrive at the top just as the light begins to break, giving you a view that stretches across the peaks and, on clear days, all the way to Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. After taking some time at the summit, you’ll begin the long descent back down the mountain, passing through Shipton’s and Old Moses. You’ll reach the Sirimon Gate by the afternoon, where your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Nanyuki for lunch and then on to Nairobi, arriving back in the city in the late evening.

Important Information for the Express Trek
-
Altitude Awareness: This is a very fast ascent. Because you are climbing to nearly 5,000 meters in just three days, the risk of altitude sickness is higher than on longer treks. It is important to listen to your guide, drink plenty of water, and move at a slow, steady pace ("pole pole").
-
The Support Team: Your porters will carry the food, water, and most of your heavy gear, while your guide will lead the way and monitor your health. They are experts on the mountain and will make the final call on the timing for the summit push based on the weather and how everyone is feeling.
-
Clothing and Gear: You need to be prepared for extreme cold. While the walk starts in mild temperatures, the summit push is often well below freezing with high winds. You’ll need thermal layers, a high-quality sleeping bag, and sturdy, broken-in hiking boots.
-
The Route: Sirimon is known for being drier than the other routes, but weather on Mount Kenya can change in minutes. Even in the dry season, you should be prepared for rain or snow at the higher elevations.
-
Physical Preparation: This itinerary involves a massive descent on the final day, dropping from the summit all the way back to the gate. It is very hard on the knees and legs, so being in good physical shape before you start is essential for enjoying the experience.
