Itinerary and Where to Stay
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara
On the first day, you will head out from Nairobi in the morning for the drive toward the Mara. The route takes you through the higher ground before the land drops away as you enter the Rift Valley. You’ll stop at a local spot to stretch your legs and look out over the wide valley floor before moving on toward Narok. This is the main town in the region, so it’s the place to stop for fuel and a quick break. From Narok, the road turns to dirt and gravel, leading you through Maasai land until you reach the eastern gate of the reserve. You’ll arrive at Mara Sopa Lodge in time for lunch. The lodge sits on a hill and is made up of unique, round stone cottages. In the afternoon, you’ll head out for your first game drive in the hills surrounding the lodge, which are known for being home to several large lion prides. You’ll return to the lodge as the sun goes down for dinner and a quiet evening.

Mid-RangeDay 2: Full Day in Masai Mara
The second day is dedicated to getting deep into the reserve. You’ll start early, just as the sun is coming up, to catch the predators while they are still active. You’ll spend the morning moving across the plains, tracking wildlife like elephants, buffalo, and the big cats. Your guide will likely head toward the flatter grasslands where cheetahs are often found hunting. You can take a packed breakfast to eat out in the bush to make the most of your time, or return to the lodge later in the morning. Since the sun is strongest in the middle of the day, you’ll head back to Sopa for lunch and some downtime. You can spend a few hours by the pool or resting in your cottage while the animals retreat into the shade. In the late afternoon, you’ll head back out for another drive, exploring new areas and seeing what else you can find before heading back for dinner.

Mid-RangeDay 3: Mara River & Border Exploration
On the third day, you have the luxury of even more time to explore without any rush. This is a great day to head toward different sections of the park, perhaps driving toward the river or exploring the thickets where leopards like to hide. Having this extra day allows you to sit and watch animal behavior for longer, watching a herd of elephants at a waterhole or following a pride of lions as they move through the grass. If you’re interested in the local culture, this is also a good time to visit a Maasai village near the lodge to see their traditional way of life and how they manage their livestock in a landscape full of predators. You’ll spend the rest of the afternoon on a final game drive, making the most of your last full day in the wild. You’ll finish the evening back at the lodge for your final dinner in the Mara.

Mid-RangeDay 4: Morning Game Drive & Return
The last day is kept simple and relaxed. You’ll have a full breakfast at the lodge and take your time getting your things together. Once you’ve checked out, you’ll begin the drive back toward Nairobi. You’ll follow the same route out of the reserve and back through the town of Narok, where you’ll stop for a quick lunch and a break from the road. As you drive back up the escarpment toward the city, you’ll notice the air getting cooler and the landscape changing back to the busy outskirts of the capital. Your guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport in the late afternoon, marking the end of the trip.

Quick Info
- Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights
- Difficulty: Easy
- Starts: Nairobi

This 4-day itinerary allows for a deeper exploration of the Masai Mara National Reserve. With three nights in the park, travelers can venture further into the Mara Triangle and the Talek areas, which are often a bit too far to reach on a standard shorter trip. Having this extra time means you don’t have to rush; you can spend a full day out in the wild with a packed lunch, sitting quietly to watch a family of elephants at a waterhole or waiting patiently to see if a cheetah begins a hunt. This third night gives you the chance to really see the different landscapes of the Mara, from the rocky hills near the gates to the wide-open plains where the large herds gather.
